Nancy believes that portrait painting is amongst the most satisfying art forms because it involves capturing a likeness as well as the personality and soul of the model while still creating a significant work of art. Nancy paints mostly from photographs but when possible prefers a combination of photographs with some life sittings. She believes that portraiture is a collaboration between the subject and artist, and she encourages input from the client.
Born and educated in New York City, Nancy graduated from the High School of Music and Art, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture, a Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University, and a Doctorate degree in art and art education from the Columbia University Teachers College. She was awarded a Gourgaud Fellowship in painting to study for one year in Paris and at the American Academy of Rome, and Columbia University's Brevoort-Eichmoyer fellowship. She was selected for the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program, and the John Howard Sanden Master Class of Professional Portrait Painting.
